Filtration (remove)Enquire Now

Sand filters are used extensively in the water industry throughout the word as an integral part of the potable water purification process.

Three different types of filter systems are used, rapid gravity sand filters, up-flow sand filters as well as slow sand filters. Rapid and up-flow filters require flocculants to work properly and, where water taste and odour are affected, a layer of activated carbon may be included in the sand bed medium mix.

Passing flocculated water through a rapid gravity sand filter strains out the floc as well as the particles trapped within it, reducing bacteria and removing most of the solids too.

During the backwash / pressure cycle, the floc is removed from the filter sand and backwashed into settling tanks, finally being disposed of as waste material or, in some cases, used as compost.

Use of quality filter sand media in sand filters will greatly reduce the risk of potable water contamination. MWS has a range of different filter sand products available for use in general, as well as specific filtration problem applications .
